Transform Negativity into Positivity: A Simple Shift for Your Teen with ADHD
Feb 04, 2025Is your teen with ADHD often caught in a spiral of negative thoughts? You're not alone. Many teens with ADHD experience a heightened sensitivity to stress and a propensity for negative thinking. But there's hope, and it starts with a simple yet powerful shift in perspective.
Today, I want to introduce you to a transformative technique that can help your teen start seeing the world—and themselves—in a much more positive light. This method, rooted in cognitive behavioral therapy, is called reframing, and it begins with two little words: "At least..."
The Power of "At Least..."
By using "At least..." your teen can gently nudge their mindset from negative to neutral or even positive. For instance, if they're feeling down about a tough day, simply reflecting, "At least I learned something new," can open the door to a more positive outlook. This technique helps by:
- Validating feelings: It acknowledges the struggle without dwelling on it.
- Encouraging positivity: It introduces a silver lining, making the situation more manageable.
Why This Works
The "At least..." technique doesn't demand an overhaul of their emotions but offers a manageable step towards positivity. It meets your teen where they are, making it a practical tool they are more likely to use. Each time they find a silver lining, they forge new neural pathways, gradually wiring their brain to default to a more positive outlook.
Implementing This At Home
Start by modeling this behavior yourself. When you face setbacks, verbalize your "At least..." statements. Make it a regular part of your family’s conversation. It’s about demonstrating how to shift focus from frustration to finding something to be grateful for or optimistic about.
Let’s Make It Stick
Encourage your teen to practice this technique daily. Maybe they jot down their "At least..." moments in a journal or share them during dinner. Regular practice will turn this into a habit, slowly transforming their outlook. Click here to watch the video for a deeper dive!
