The Complexity of Mood Disorders in ADHD

Mood disorders are a common companion of ADHD, and for us parents, they can be the most trying part. Cindy Goldrich, an esteemed ADHD clinician, sums it up beautifully: "Parents, your job is to be strong and calm." It's our responsibility to set a stable tone for our children.

Understanding Oppositional Defiance

OD varies from simple non-compliance to more severe behaviors like violence. It's a prominent symptom of ADHD and is often a child’s way of shielding themselves from the daily pains of ADHD. The good news? Since OD is a maladaptive condition, it can be unlearned with the right approach and parenting strategies.

Parenting Strategies for OD

  1. Be Imperturbable: Like a rock, unwavering and calm, especially when your teen is unraveling. Your steadiness is their anchor.

  2. Love Unconditionally: Show affection, as much as they can tolerate. Remember, in everything, remain unshakeable.

  3. Take Your Sails Out of Their Wind: When your teen is in a mood, don't escalate the situation. Remove yourself if necessary, but always reaffirm your love for them.

  4. Re-engage Thoughtfully: When the storm subsides, re-engage with empathy and tenderness. Listen more, talk less. Use body language to express your love.

Why This Matters

Teens with ADHD often struggle with self-regulation. By consistently modeling calm and composed behavior, we teach them to manage their moods effectively. It's about doing the hard inner work to remain calm and collected, even when it's challenging.

Your Role in Their Journey

Parenting a child with ADHD requires an extra measure of love, empathy, and positive reinforcement. It's the only effective way to guide a brain wired differently.

I believe in you, parents. You have the strength and the resolve to navigate these challenging waters. Remember, showing up and learning is the first step towards empowerment.
