Transform Your Parenting Approach: Discover the "Validate and State" Method

adhd parenting Feb 23, 2025

Do you ever find yourself in a cycle of hope and disappointment with your teen's promises, especially concerning their commitments and responsibilities? If so, I have something that might just change the game for you and your child.

✨ Introducing the "Validate and State" Method

This method is a powerful tool for navigating the turbulent waters of raising a teen with ADHD. It helps bridge the gap between what your teen intends to do and what they actually accomplish.

Step 1: Validate Their Intentions

Start by acknowledging what your teen is saying without judgment. This shows that you're listening and you value their efforts and intentions. For instance, if your teen says, "Mom, I swear I'll have my science project done by Friday," you respond with, "I hear you saying you're committed to finishing your project by Friday, and I admire your determination."

Step 2: State the Reality

Next, gently introduce reality in a neutral and factual manner. This isn't about discouraging them but helping them plan realistically. You could say, "The reality is, projects like this often need a bit more time than expected, especially to make them great. How about we set up some checkpoints throughout the week to see how you're doing?"

📋 Why Use "Validate and State"?

This method does more than just help manage tasks; it builds essential life skills:

  • Enhances Self-Awareness: Helps teens recognize and learn from their recurring patterns.
  • Encourages Responsibility: Guides them to understand the importance of planning and sticking to their commitments.
  • Strengthens Your Relationship: Shows your teen that you support them and are on their side, which can reduce tension at home.

✅ Try It Tonight!

Next time your teen makes a promise about homework, chores, or curfews, use the "Validate and State" method. It's simple, effective, and can make a significant difference in how your teen views their responsibilities and capabilities.
