What NOT to Say to Someone With ADHD
Sep 01, 2023What Not to Say to Someone with ADHD: Dispelling Myths, Promoting Compassion
Hello everyone, I'm Annie Adjan, your go-to resource for parenting and managing ADHD at home and in school. Today, we're tackling a sensitive issue: the misconceptions surrounding ADHD and what you should never say to someone dealing with it.
Why ADHD Misconceptions Are Harmful
ADHD is in the spotlight, yet the discourse is filled with myths and misunderstandings. This lack of awareness can be detrimental, particularly for young people who are trying to navigate the world with ADHD.
The Injustice of Misunderstanding
Let's put things in perspective. If you had asthma, you wouldn't hesitate to use an inhaler. If you battled depression, therapy and medication would be the go-to remedies. Why then, when it comes to ADHD, do some people feel it's okay to make flippant remarks like, "Just try harder," or "Everyone has ADHD these days"?
The Right Language Matters
Such comments are not only uninformed but also dismissive. ADHD is a real, neurological condition that affects cognitive functions and self-regulation. It impacts families and academic success, and it's not something one can simply "snap out of."
So, what should you say to someone who has ADHD? Consider these alternatives:
- "What's your experience with ADHD?"
- "I'm curious, what have you learned about managing it?"
- "What do you wish people understood about ADHD?"
- "How can I support you as a friend?"
Be the Change
By fostering a dialogue grounded in accurate information and empathy, we can shift the public perception of ADHD from one of stigmatization to understanding.
If you hear someone making a misguided comment about ADHD, take the opportunity to correct them. Your awareness and understanding could be a lifeline for someone dealing with this condition.
