Why Is My Teen Lazy?

adhd parenting studying Apr 06, 2025

Your teen wants to succeed. They really do.
But with ADHD, wanting isn’t enough — activation is the real challenge.

One of the most effective strategies I use in coaching is something called body doubling. And I’ve made a short video that walks you through exactly how to do it — even if your teen is resistant or you’ve already “tried everything.”

Here’s the heart of it:

🧠 Body doubling means being physically present and starting the task with your teen — not doing it for them, but doing it alongside them.

Think of it like teaching them to ride a bike: you don’t sit on the curb and cheer them on. You hold the bike, you jog beside them, and you only let go once they’ve found their balance.

That’s what body doubling is for the ADHD brain — a boost of structure, connection, and momentum when motivation is running on empty.

Inside the video, you’ll learn:

Why task initiation is so hard (hint: it’s brain chemistry, not bad attitude)
How to scaffold without enabling
What to do if your teen refuses your help
Why this simple strategy often leads to stronger confidence and a better relationship

You don’t have to push harder. You just have to walk with them at the start.
